When we heard that our Bromborough Pool Cafe & Shop had recently revamped their menu offering, we had to find out more.
Next time you visit, you’ll notice new menus on the tables and two digital display screens positioned above the counter, clearly showing customers the full menu and prices at a glance.
So, what new items have been added to the menu?
We asked Mike Christiansen, Activity Manager at the Cafe, to ‘spill the beans’…
Mike explained that the most popular additions have been the sausage and bacon toasted sandwiches. Another popular addition has been the margherita (cheese and tomato) and pepperoni pizzas. These have now been promoted to the full menu, whereas they were previously just part of our activities during school holidays. Customers with a sweet tooth will be pleased to see a new selection of fresh cakes are available.
Other changes include new tables and chairs, plus the addition of a double pizza oven and a Ninja air fryer. In order to cater for people’s different tastes in coffee, we have a new coffee machine and filter coffee available too. Customers can also purchase a kids meal for £1, for every adult’s meal they buy. More regular offers and daily specials will also be coming soon.
Why did we make these changes?
Mike said: “The changes were made to help us continuously improve with the times, modernise the cafe, make it more current, and improve the quality of the environment and what we offer.
“We now have designated stations set up to teach the people we support to work in different sections of the cafe. So, one time they may be doing the till station, or serving drinks on one side of the cafe, and then doing food prep on the other side.”
The new work stations are split as follows – Till and Cake Station, Drink Station, Serving/Concierge/Cleaning Station, Food Prep Station, Dishwash Station. Each station is fully labelled, so everyone knows where everything goes, and what work is required for that station.
Mike continues: “What is also great is that the old manager’s office has been converted into a fully-functional staff room for the people we support. This is to create a more work-like setting for them. If they were to move on to work placements, it is likely they would have a staff room with their own staff notice board, and perhaps a station for them to make and prepare their own lunches and drinks.
“This room also provides them with an extra space, so if it does get too much in the cafe, or if the noise levels are loud or they experience a sensory overload, then they have a break away space they can go to.”
How were the people we support involved in these changes?
Mike explains that, along with taking into account feedback from customers, staff members and senior managers; many discussions were had with the people we support, about changes and updates.
Discussions focused on the best positions and setup for the different areas of the cafe, taking into account accessibility for access, learning skills, and carrying out activities. Our support staff in the cafe were also great at helping this process, and working with the people we support to help plan what would work best for the whole cafe team and also the customers.
The people we support also carried out a range of tasks in the cafe update process. They helped with proofing and checking the wording and prices on the new menus. They helped install the new digital menus, using USB sticks. And they also spent a lot of time learning new ways of working with different food items and the new layouts of storage cupboards and drawers.
“All of the involvement has been immense,” said Mike. “But I think one of their biggest achievements was designing their own staff room. They chose their favourite colours and then put it to a vote. They wanted more vibrant colours in there, to make them feel happy and welcoming when they come in, and colourful pictures and motivational quotes on the wall. And having their own bistro station [to make their own lunches] has helped them become even more independent, which has been brilliant.”
So, what’s next?
The next step in the refresh of Bromborough Pool Cafe & Shop is updating the outside areas. A Guinea Pig Village – a larger outdoor space for our little fluffy friends to roam has been constructed, alongside ongoing work to just make the external area a nice place for children and their families to play, relax, and enjoy, during the nicer weather.
