Proprioception is a sense which gives us feedback about where our bodies are, both in open spaces and in relation to other objects, and also how our different body parts are moving. We get messages from our muscles and joints telling our brain exactly where we are and what is around us. This sense helps us regulate our movement, posture, and the appropriate pressures needed for tasks – such as cracking open an egg without crushing it. Some autistic people may experience varying differences and difficulties related to this sense.
This person might have difficulty understanding where their body is in relation to other objects. This may make them appear clumsy – knocking things over, dropping items, misjudging personal space, standing too close to others.
People with this over-responsiveness may also have difficulty in regulating pressure, so may break items or struggle with writing because the pressure they use on a pen can be so heavy that they tear the paper. Some people even say it affects their sense of self and who they are as a person.
A person with an under responsive proprioception sense might seek out more sensory input by banging objects, jumping about, stomping when walking, bumping into people, or biting or sucking on their fingers.
Deep pressure can help these people. They may like tight bear hugs, tight clothing, or weighted items such as heavy blankets or bags.
If a person requires extra proprioceptive feedback, perhaps trial a weighted backpack for them when they are out walking. An occupational therapist can also advise on a wide range of suitable sensory equipment.
