Books that might be helpful to autistic people, carers and families

This year at Autism Together we created a library of books that we thought might be useful or of interest for our staff or the people we support.

The Together Library has a wide range of books covering autism, other neurodiversities, mental health, wellbeing, and much more.

Mat borrowed the book All Birds Have Anxiety from our Together Library, read his review below...

Overseen by Julie Logan, our Head of Intervention & Assurance, she has hand-picked the books as an important resource within our charity.

The books fall within the following categories:

  • Visual Support (easy read guides, shorter stories)

  • Autism & Learning Disabilities

  • Wellbeing

  • Mental Health

  • Related Fiction and Non-Fiction

While this library is only for internal use within our organisation, we thought it might be useful to share some recent reviews from our staff members about the books they’ve borrowed…

Amy Jones, our Advice & Support Officer, left a review for the book Can I tell you about Eating Disorders:

“This book is targeted for the age range 7-15 years, and I felt it was perfectly placed for this. The book was very accessible and clear in the language it used, making the subject area less intimidating to read.

“It would also work well as a good introduction to disordered eating, for adults who want to know more. The book used characters to describe their struggles and how this affected them, making them relatable and also gave a wide range of different categories of disordered eating.

“I would definitely recommend this, for parents and their children, if they have any concerns.”

Mat Nye from our Learning Culture Team borrowed the book All Birds Have Anxiety (pictured at start of page).

Mat said: “Fantastic book that captures the complexity of anxiety, not just the mental health aspect, it acknowledges that we all have anxiety at points and how it may vary from one person to another.

“The perfectly timed photographs that accompany the messages highlight each page as you guess which bird is that – and if you really want the answers they are contained in the back.

“I highly recommend, great for shared reading.”
