Day Services - life skills for autistic adults

Our Day Services sites are spread across Wirral and West Cheshire, with each offering autistic adults a range of activities and opportunities from Monday to Friday, each week.

In each area, we have teams of dedicated staff encouraging the people they support to try new things and learn new skills, along with enjoying their favourite and familiar activities and pastimes.

The people we support in our Day Services can learn a range of meaningful and transferable life skills

An important part of the support offering from our Day Services is to equip the people we support with a range of practical life skills for autistic individuals, relevant to their needs and abilities. As with all aspects of the care we provide, the teaching of life skills is person-centred and will be tailored to each individual.

ASDAN awards
Most people who attend our Day Services will be encouraged to work towards ASDAN awards. ASDANs are externally accredited awards that recognise personal progress and achievement. They offer individuals the chance to develop knowledge and skills for learning, work and life – and receive a meaningful award at the end of the journey.

This tangible goal helps make learning more enjoyable, and the people we support always enjoy being presented with a genuine award certificate to reward their achievements.

Recently we enjoyed an awards presentation at our Raby Day Services, where 10 of the people we support had their achievements in baking recognised with ASDAN awards.

The awards were given out by Activity Manager Owain Roberts, who said:

“The Baking Group here at Raby provides the people we support with a fun and tasty activity – but it’s so much more than that. It offers a valuable opportunity to develop transferable life skills that are key to increasing independence – such as working as a team, developing fine motor skills, and making choices.”

Of course, ASDANs aren’t restricted to teaching cookery skills. There are extensive options for the people we support including communication, literacy, sport and leisure, the world of work, and lots more.

Workplace skills
What’s more, if the world of work is something a person we support wants to explore further, we have three public-facing cafes where they can gain experience in food hygiene and preparation, health and safety, customer service, money management and much more.

If they then want to take the skills they’ve learnt with us and apply them within the wider workplace, they can through our Pathway to Work scheme where we support autistic people to find a placement that works for them, ensuring reasonable adjustments to help them overcome any struggles they may face when accessing employment.
