Across our autism services, our staff teams are embracing technology and new media to empower the people we support…
Each autistic person faces unique challenges, which could be in communication, sensory processing, or navigating daily routines. Thanks to advancements in technology and media, new tools are helping to bridge gaps, grow independence, and unlock creative potential in many individuals.
Tech is transforming how autistic people engage with the world, and our staff are certainly embracing these tools through media services for autistic adults.
Some of the people we support like to use touchscreen tablets to help them communicate and to reduce stress and anxiety. There are a range of apps that staff can download to tablets, to help the people we support understand their day and be prepared for what is ahead. Calendar apps and visual structures can be used to help individuals manage their routines and reduce anxiety around planned activities.
Some people we support use apps to aid their communication, too. One such app is called Proloquo2Go. This allows non-speaking people to press on graphic symbols, prompting the device to ‘speak’ and express their thoughts and needs. They might even choose to use this when out shopping and request a certain item they’re looking for, or to explain to their support worker how they’re feeling.
In some of our services we have interactive sensory rooms. Here people we support can use light, sound, and touch-responsive tech to create an environment tailored to their sensory needs.
Our Day Services provide many different opportunities for the people we support to use tech and media to get creative and push the limits of their imaginations.
One of our locations, Gallagher House, offers comprehensive autism support with media service. There, people we support are encouraged to create a range of digital art, 3-D print their own designs, try digital photography and video, do stop-motion animation, and even create their own podcasts! In fact, one of our podcast groups even had their Premier League Podcast syndicated to a North West radio station, and it is also now available to stream on most podcast platforms.
Of course, technology and new media isn’t there to replace good support, but to enhance it. For that reason, our staff always look to ensure the people they support explore and choose the tools they feel most comfortable with; ones that match their individual strengths, preferences, and sensory needs.
