Autism & Social Interaction

A key characteristic of autism relates to perceived differences in terms of communication, which can include social and emotional interaction. Some autistic people may find this overwhelming. Many autistic people want to have friends and relationships, but some find this difficult. This can lead to individuals becoming withdrawn or seeming to prefer being alone.

Autistic people may struggle with...

  • Reading and understanding other people’s emotions.
  • Understanding facial expressions.
  • Taking cues from body language.
  • The concept of turn taking.
  • Beginning and ending conversations.
  • Keeping up with the flow of conversations.
  • Processing delays.

Differences like these can make social situations confusing, which can lead to social isolation, depression and mental health issues.

There are services available, however, that support people to improve their social interactions and communication skills.

Coffee Mornings and more...

We host regular Coffee Mornings across the region, aimed at parents and carers of autistic children.

Each month, we’ll be meeting in the community with our morning events taking place at Benricks Cafe, Prenton; Quirky Cafe in Hoylake; our Bromborough Pool Cafe; and our Community Cafe at Bridge Farm near Ellesmere Port.

Hosted by Amy, our Advice & Support Officer, it’s a great chance to get advice and support, while meeting other parents and carers, over a cuppa.

Amy also runs our Rainbows Groups for autistic children aged under five years along with our new initiative Family Adventures, which offers an inclusive and supportive environment for families to enjoy local days out attractions and make connections with other parents, without needing to feel stressed or self-conscious at all.
